Filipino skilled workers and professionals was signed between the Philippine government and British Columbia, Canada. The agreement will cover hiring policies to improve the immigration policy in hiring skilled workers and other professionals in the province.

The agreement is expected to create employment opportunities for the upcoming 2010 Olympics to be held in Vancouver, Whistler and nearby municipalities. Jose Brillantes, Philippine Ambassador to Canada went to Vancouver last December 19 to sign the agreement with officials from the British Columbia.

According to the Ambassador, the agreement will widely open doors for Filipino workers. Brillantes said “It is really going to be a chance for all to be able to take advantage of this good fortune that ‘smiled our way’."

“This shows Philippine government doing something on special foreign policy that is enshrined in our Constitution to provide protection and promotion of the welfare of overseas Filipinos," Brillantes added.

There are more than 500,000 Filipinos currently working and living in Canada.

For the year 2008, the Philippines is the third largest source country for new immigrants in Canada
